The Chargers won’t be at full strength against a tough opponent. They expect a physical game against the hard-nosed Ravens, who advanced to last season’s AFC Championship Game before losing to the Steelers.

The previous year, it was the Chargers who were one win away from the Super Bowl before losing to the New England Patriots.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo is wearing a brace on his injured right knee and walking with crutches.

Mayo sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during the first quarter of Monday night’s 25-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills and could miss up to eight weeks, the Boston Globe reported. The Patriots said only that Mayo had a knee injury and didn’t practice Wednesday…

Mayo’s agent, Sean Kiernan, hasn’t returned an e-mail seeking comment…

Ochocinco handling kicking duties for Bengals..

There are sometimes, very entertaining aspects to preseason football. On Thursday night, we have Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco to thank for that..

With veteran K Shayne Graham being held out due to a groin injury, Ochocinco has taken over kicking duties during tonight’s preseason game against the New England Patriots at Foxborough Stadium..

Ochocinco’s talent was first displayed when he followed up a J.T. O’Sullivan 24-yard touchdown pass to Chris Henry near the end of the second quarter with an extra point — which was dead-center through the uprights.. Ochocinco also opened the second half by kicking off sending a line-drive kick to the Patriots 9 yard line. The only other kicking situation for the Bengals occured with 14:52 remaining in the second quarter, when Lewis elected to go for it on a fourth-and-7. O’Sullivan was sacked for a loss of a yard..

There are two great things about Ochocinco’s kicking — one, he’s actually pretty good. Two he at some point has talked coach Marvin Lewis into letting him be the emergency kicker, and then proved he could do it during practice. Classic.

All teams have protocols in place for such emergency situations — who will take the place of snappers, kickers, punters, etc. — and often practice them. Tonight’s situation is reminicsent of another game at Foxborough. During a regular season game in Week 5 of the 2004 season, WR Wes Welker took over kicking duties for Olindo Mare — who was injured during pregame. Welker handled kickoffs, hit a 29-yard field goal and an extra point in that game..
